Welcome! The mission of the PTA is to improve the education provided to DLS students by supporting the school and its activities. The PTA helps to fund a wish list of items from the school as well as many additional activities that make our school such a wonderful place. The success of the PTA is directly linked to the participation of parents, so we strongly encourage everyone to be involved this year.

When you join the DLS PTA with your annual $15 fee, you make great events like Night Market and Kickball Tournament possible. Without insurance, purchased with PTA membership fee funds, fun PTA events cannot take place.

How do I get Involved?

The PTA is a volunteer-driven organization. There are many ways to be involved. There are activities that can accommodate any schedule and skill set. Each family is asked to volunteer 15 hours every school year.

Click here to learn more. Joining the PTA counts as one hour - get started here!

What do you get when you join the DLS PTA with your annual $15 fee? Membership in a community dedicated to your child’s education and growth. Support the DLS PTA, the Colorado PTA, and your child’s community by signing up online here.

Please Volunteer - 15 hours per year

Volunteers Needed:
  • Thanks to everyone who volunteered this year!  You’ve made the school and the community stronger and we appreciate your efforts.
  • Things will slow down over the summer, but….keep an eye out for the registration packet for volunteer interest forms for next year.
Please send an email to volunteers@dlspta.org if you are interested in other volunteer opportunities.

New: The DLS Recycling and Compost Cart Cleaning Crew!!

A huge thanks to CeCe and Abby Liang, Scarlett and Audrey Keeley, Sarita and Shayan Patel, Soli Mamet, Jeff Miller and Lisa Peloso for tirelessly scrubbing the 43 recycling and compost carts, aa well as the 25 classroom recycling bins, at DLS East. Thanks for keeping DLS green!!

Updated: Please donate your gently used uniforms!

As you enjoy your time off and prep for the next school year, please bring your gently used, clean uniform tops and bottoms to either campus – there are donation bins near the office at each school. As a reminder, ALL vintage and current logos can be used again next year as long as the uniforms are in good shape. (Please put any uniform tops or bottoms with rips and tears in the Red Apple Recycling bin at DLS East, and do make sure to wash any uniforms prior to donating them.)

As a reminder, for 2017-2018, K-5 will wear blue shirts of any logo, 5th graders may wear white shirts for this one year only (next year 5th grade will just be blue), and 6-8 middle schoolers can wear either burgundy/red or white shirts. [ view full uniform policy here ]

These uniforms will be sold at registration, back to school nights, and year-round at Back on the Rack (note: not all sizes and colors will be available – inventory depends on parent donations). New uniforms can be purchased through Impact We PrintDennis Uniforms, and Educational Outfitters.

Spirit Wear shirts can be worn instead of a uniform shirt every Friday – these are sold by the PTA at school events (look for them at Registration in July) or at Back on the Rack year-round.

Please email president.elect@dlspta.org with any questions.

Use Nanno Child Care App and Support DLS

Nanno is a new on-demand childcare app launching here in Denver to help parents find last-minute childcare by connecting them with available caregivers with whom they share a connection – whether through a friend, colleague, fellow parent, school, etc. The network is invitation-only, and Nanno has invited all Denver Language School parents and teachers to join the DLS “hub” on the Nanno network. When a member of the DLS network books or accepts a job through Nanno, Nanno will donate 10% of its revenue for that job back to DLS. The invitation went out to teachers a few weeks ago, and since then several have joined. If you’re interested in trying Nanno – as either a parent or a caregiver – please send an email to hello@nanno.com or visit their website at www.nanno.com to request an invite – or click here to find out more about how it works

Support DLS With Your Summer Shopping

Remember, over the summer you can still support DLS with your purchases at King Soopers, Safeway, Back on the Rack, Amazon, and more! Visit the Shopping page on the PTA website for more details, and thank you!

Want to be a resource for new families or teachers?

The PTA is setting up a resource list of parents who are willing to serve as a “mentor” for incoming families and teachers. This gives new parents a chance to connect with existing members of the DLS community and gives teachers who have moved from other countries a local touch-point for questions about Denver and U.S. culture.

Interested? Please sign up here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7ZFHQQG. Questions? Email president.elect@dlspta.org.

The PTA is looking for leaders and needs you!

Thanks to everyone who joined the PTA for our informational coffee on April 6 - we’re excited about next year!

We still have a few leadership openings for the 2017-2018 school year – does one of these sound like you or someone you know?

All PTA executive board positions are technically open (except for next year’s president) until voted upon. Click here to view titles and descriptions for all positions. Particular needs that remain unclaimed and open at the moment:

    • President-Elect – Shadow the PTA President for a year, then become the president for the 2018-2019 school year (2-year commitment). Attend monthly PTA Exec Board Meetings and SAC (School Accountability Committee) meetings once a month.

We’re not only looking for PTA Board Members (1-year commitment), but people to take the lead on our various activities and events if you would rather take on a shorter-term project. We still need:

    • Chinese New Year Chair (February) – Arrange for decorations, programs, and food trucks and coordinate volunteers on the night. Work with the program head and school on rehearsal needs and with room parents on costume needs.

In addition, we also need Room Parents for next year, which is a great way to get involved in your classroom and get to know your teacher better. You can be a Room Parent and also hold one of the positions above – there are two Room Parents per class.

If you’re interested in any of these positions or have any questions, please email president.elect@dlspta.org.

If you’re interested in being a Room Parent for next year, please email mandarinsupport@dlspta.org or spanishsupport@dlspta.org with your grade and program.

We look forward to working with you next year!

    Corporate Matching

More than 15,000 employers will match employee donations – does yours? So far this year more than $2,500 has been donated by Janus and Google Benevity – huge thank yous to both the corporations and their generous employees!

If your corporation offers matching funds, please direct the funds to the Denver Language School PTA, not to the school itself, to ensure the school actually receives the matched funds. Any questions or issues with the process? Contact treasurer@dlspta.org.

A letter from the PTA Executive Board President

    Dear DLS Families,

We are just about to wrap up the school year, and I want to take a moment to thank you. It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to serve as your PTA President for the past school year. The PTA Board has accomplished some amazing things this year and supported our first year as the K-8 Denver Language School! There is no way this could have happened without the DLS community. Your investment of time and financial support help make our school a terrific place.

Here’s a list of just some of the programs that the PTA has directly funded or that DLS has been able to fund by using PTA dollars this year:
    • Teacher Mini Grants
    • Learning and Leadership Fund
    • Scholarships for the middle school China trip
    • Chinese New Year
    • Fiesta Hispanica
    • Emergency Family Fund
    • Playworks program
    • Funding for third grade rock climbing field trip and Keystone Science Camp
    • PE Equipment
    • Staff Appreciation Week
    • Green Team efforts - recycling/composting and DLS Garden
    • Wellness Program for DLS staff
    • Popsicle and Pizza Parties in classrooms
While fundraising is a large part of the PTA, the group also has a goal of community-building. Events that the PTA sponsors are Kinder Kleenex, Bingo Night, Middle School Dances, Meet- and -Greets, and Continuations. The PTA helps with volunteers for school-sponsored events, works closely with the DLS Administration to support their vision for our school, and attends both monthly DLS Board meetings and School Accountability Committee meetings.

The PTA’s success this year would not have happened without our amazing volunteer Executive Board: Mindee Forman, Kristine Thomas, Susie Grant, Megan Eliassen, Christy Wilson, Jayme Willie, Johanna Garton, Kathryn Blackburn, Theresa Helbach, Babette Hudson-Tsao, Amanda Breault, Victoria Grotewiel, Leah Capritta, Andrew Maclennan, Tonia Seidl, Maria Casaverde-Marin, and Wendy Green. You are and amazing, generous, and lovely group, and without you we could not have made this year such an accomplishment. Congratulations to Mindee Forman who will serve as PTA President next year and who is already hard at work on next school year’s events.

To our volunteer chairs and co-chairs. Thank you for your time and dedication, these events would not be possible without you: Caren Elenowitz (Book Fair); Judit Varga and Tiffany Briseno (Box Tops); Lorena Lopez (Restaurant Nights); Lisa Peloso (Green Team); Jennifer Malchiodi, Sarah Hines, Amanda Beault, and Victoria Grotewiel (Night Market); Melissa Steele (Uniform Sales), Wendy Green (Silent Auction for Night Market, Direct Giving Party, and Art Show); Tania Zeigler (Bingo Nights), Adam Tsai (Skate City Nights); Amanda Breault and Victoria Grotewiel (Direct Giving Party); Lorena Lopez, Babette Hudson-Tsao, and Theresa Helbach (Chinese New Year); Christy Wilson and Jayme Willie (Fiesta Hispanica); Kathleen and Jon Green, Rebecca and David Bochmann (Kickball); Austin Pyle (Sponsorships); Mandy Allison (Holiday Gift Drive); and Johanna Garton (Continuation).

To Kathy, Eva, Gwen, Doug, Chelsea, and Caleb, and all of the teachers and staff at Denver Language School, thank you for your hard work day in and day out with our children. You make this amazing school possible and we appreciate all that you do to make our children’s educational experience unparalleled.

To the MANY volunteers who donated time, set up/cleaned up after events, donated gifts, and the list goes on…. thank you. The PTA has listed your names  from the SignUp.com site, however, I know there are numerous many more that helped out in the classrooms, at field trips, and bringing in snacks who we didn’t know about. The PTA is truly grateful for your time and service.

Please reach out if you questions about the PTA, as I will still be a fellow volunteer at the school. Also, please consider getting involved, regardless of capacity -, you won’t regret it. We have a wonderful community of parents! Many of them I would never have met had we not worked together to further our school and now they are dear friends.

    Have a lovely summer,
    Ann Konieczny
    PTA President, 2016-2017 School Year

    Update on Fundraising Efforts

Thank you to our summer fundraiser sponsors and attendees for helping support DLS! Here are some recent fundraising results:
Thanks again for supporting DLS with your shopping, dining, and activities!

Thank You for your Support on Colorado Gives Day!

Colorado Gives Day was a huge success - we are at 90% of our fundraising goal for the year! If you weren't able to donate on December 6, there is still opportunity to give - click the buttons below to make a recurring or one-time donation to DLS.

    https://www.coloradogives.org/DenverLanguageSchoolPTA/overview

The DLS PTA supports a wide range of projects and activities to benefit the school community and our students.

For May 12 we highlight Teacher Mini Grants.

All teachers at DLS have $200 each year to use as they see fit to support their classrooms. These grants are spent in a variety of ways depending on the needs of the class. For example, the 3rd-grade Spanish program classes joined forces at the beginning of the year to purchase butterfly kits for their students. Recently, Ms. Fatima purchased new books and dictionaries with her mini grant to support her 4th-grade Spanish students.

For April 14 we highlight two DLS events that benefit from PTA support:  Chinese New Year and Fiesta Hispanica.

DLS’s take on Chinese New Year, the biggest Chinese holiday of the year, is enough to wow even native Chinese audience members and bring them back to their childhoods.  Fiesta Hispanica’s energy, excitement, and brilliant colors embrace both Spanish and Latin American cultures.

The pageantry, song, and dance are made possible, in part, by the PTA.  The PTA uses its funds to rent the performance spaces and purchase some of the decorations.  PTA volunteers oversee ticket sales, decoration of the stage, feeding teachers and students during the performances, and chaperoning students while not performing.

Gwen, Eva, our wonderful teachers, and our group of talented kids impress us every year with their language, dancing, and singing skills!

Please Save Your Box Tops for Education

Each pink box top, found on many products, is worth 10 cents when clipped and turned into the school. It adds up quickly; last year, Judit Varga coordinated the school’s efforts and raised $1,200. The goal is to earn $1,400 this year. Students can deposit box tops in collection boxes in their classrooms.

There will be three competitions to collect the most box tops this year, each with surprise rewards, so start saving them now! Learn more about the program and participating products at BTFE.com. Have any questions? Contact DLS West co-coordinator Tiffany Briseno or school coordinator Judit Varga via email jvarga23@yahoo.com.

    Support DLS With Your Shopping

Did you know that you can support DLS just by shopping? Here are a few ways:

    • Buy grocery store cards from the PTA for King Soopers or Safeway from the front office at either campus. They will be also available at PTA events. Load your card before you make your purchase and use your card at checkout – 5% will go to DLS! These cards never expire and have no fees.

    • Visit http://smile.amazon.com and select Denver Language School as your charity to shop through Amazon.com - 0.5% will go to DLS!

    • Are you missing that cool DLS magnet? Get yours for $5 at the front desk of either campus or at Back on the Rack.

Be sure to tell your friends and family about these easy ways to support DLS! For more information, visit the Shopping page.
