Welcome! The mission of the PTA is to improve the education provided to DLS students by supporting the school and its activities. The PTA helps to fund a wish list of items from the school as well as many additional activities that make our school such a wonderful place. The success of the PTA is directly linked to the participation of parents, so we strongly encourage everyone to be involved this year.

When you join the DLS PTA with your annual $15 fee, you make great events like Night Market and Kickball Tournament possible. Without insurance, purchased with PTA membership fee funds, fun PTA events cannot take place.

How do I get Involved?

The PTA is a volunteer-driven organization. There are many ways to be involved. There are activities that can accommodate any schedule and skill set. Each family is asked to volunteer 15 hours every school year.
Click here to learn more. Joining the PTA counts as one hour - get started here!

What do you get when you join the DLS PTA with your annual $15 fee? Membership in a community dedicated to your child’s education and growth. Support the DLS PTA, the Colorado PTA, and your child’s community by signing up online here.

Please Volunteer - 15 hours per year

Volunteers Needed:
  • Middle School Dance Chaperones - Thursday, April 27 6:00-8:00 p.m. We need 2-3 chaperones for the middle school dance. Please email volunteers@dlspta.org if interested.

  • Kickball Tournament Organizers - Sunday, May 21 - We need volunteers to organize and plan the event. Time commitments range from an hour to being a referee for a game. Help make the event a success and email volunteers@dlspta.org if you’re able to volunteer.

  • East Campus Lunch Room Helpers - The kids at East Campus need some further instruction on the art of disposing their lunch. We could use a volunteer for each lunch shift to help kids compost, recycle, and throw away - and learn a little about their impact on the Earth. It is also a great way to see your kid during the school day! Sign up here.

  • Ongoing:  EAST Science Room Supply Clean Up - The middle school science teacher needs ongoing help keeping the science room supplies in order. This is a task that will occur weekly. We'd love volunteers that could help with this on a regular basis. The work can be done at home - it just requires picking up the dirty supplies at East and returning them the next morning. Sign up here.

  • We need volunteers for general help at both campuses. Stay tuned for sign-up opportunities, visit the Volunteering page for more information, or please email volunteers@dlspta.org.
Please send an email to volunteers@dlspta.org if you are interested in other volunteer opportunities.

Upcoming Events

Keep an eye out for and share upcoming PTA-sponsored events and view past events through our Facebook page as well, at https://www.facebook.com/dlspta/events.

Restaurant Week! April 24-29: Nothing Bundt Cakes, Cherry Creek

1685 S. Colorado Blvd. Suite #Q3, Denver, CO 80210, The week of April 24-29 from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. (10:00 a.m. on Saturday). 20% of purchases will support DLS - please share with your family and friends!

Red Apple Recycling Spring Drive is here! April 17-May 17

The Red Apple Recycling Spring Drive has arrived! From April 17-May 17, DLS will receive 10 cents per pound for bagged donations placed in the red schoolhouse bin in front of DLS East. Please see the flyer below for details on accepted donations. The focus for this drive is SHOES!

Did you know more than 300 million children around the world are shoeless? Red Apple Recycling donates to countries such as Chile, Guatemala, Kenya, and Mexico, so we can really make a difference! Another benefit of collecting shoes is that they are heavy, so this brings our total weight up and earns more money for our school!

During the Fall Clothing Drive, we collected 896 pounds of donations (raising $89.60 for DLS) – we can beat that!

(Remember, you can also take toys and baby gear that are in better shape to Back on the Rack, where 40% of the sale of those toys directly benefits DLS.)

Updated: The PTA is looking for leaders and needs you!

Thanks to everyone who joined the PTA for our informational coffee on April 6 - we’re excited about next year!

We still have a few leadership openings for the 2017-2018 school year – does one of these sound like you or someone you know?

All PTA executive board positions are technically open (except for next year’s president) until voted upon. Click here to view titles and descriptions for all positions. Particular needs that remain unclaimed and open at the moment:

  • President-Elect – Shadow the PTA President for a year, then become the president for the 2018-2019 school year (2-year commitment). Attend monthly PTA Exec Board Meetings and SAC (School Accountability Committee) meetings once a month.

  • Green Team Liaison - Attend monthly PTA Exec Board Meetings as a representative of the school’s Green Team. Work with the PTA, room parents, staff, and administration to promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices at DLS, including recycling, composting, the community garden, and junior farmer’s market.

We’re not only looking for PTA Board Members (1-year commitment), but people to take the lead on our various activities and events if you would rather take on a shorter-term project. We still need:

  • Chinese New Year Chair (February) – Arrange for decorations, programs, and food trucks and coordinate volunteers on the night. Work with the program head and school on rehearsal needs and with room parents on costume needs.

  • Fiesta Hispanica Chair (May) – Arrange for decorations, programs, and food trucks and coordinate volunteers on the night. Work with the program head and school on rehearsal needs and with room parents on costume needs.

  • Sponsorships Chair – Talk to local businesses and current sponsors to arrange sponsors for the 2017-2018 school year. Arrange for new banners and promo materials for the PTA website and newsletter.

  • Kickball Tournament Chairs – Set up the May Kickball Tournament. Arrange for the park, revise rules, publicize tournament, work with room parents to set up teams.

In addition, we also need Room Parents for next year, which is a great way to get involved in your classroom and get to know your teacher better. You can be a Room Parent and also hold one of the positions above – there are two Room Parents per class.

If you’re interested in any of these positions or have any questions, please email president.elect@dlspta.org.

If you’re interested in being a Room Parent for next year, please email mandarinsupport@dlspta.org or spanishsupport@dlspta.org with your grade and program.

We look forward to working with you next year!

WHEN: Sunday, May 21, 2017

Time: 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

WHERE:  Crestmoor Park, 99 S. Monaco Pkwy

WHO: Kids and adults, teachers, & staff

Join us for this family friendly event for the whole DLS community! Players will be on teams according to grade and program (i.e., 1st grade Spanish is one team, 1st grade Mandarin another). There’s no limit to the number of team members, but only 12 can be on the field at one time. Every team will play at least two games and have a blast.

Each team has a fundraising goal of $1,500. Want to give your team an extra advantage? Raise the $1,500 for your team and get one free run. Or buy a 4th out per inning. Or why not buy a free base? Referees, however, cannot be bought. See if we can beat the $18,000 we raised the first year!

Money raised from this event will go towards school necessities such as:

  • Scholarships for Teachers
  • Teaching Assistants

  • Sports Equipment for PE
  • Musical Instruments for Elementary School Music

Sound like fun?

All participants must sign up here in advance and sign the waiver (adults and kids).

Please contact president@dlspta.org

NEW! Seeking Paddlers for the DLS Dragon Boat Team!

Image may contain: 1 person, outdoor and water

We need paddlers! DLS’s dragon boat team - Agua Libre - will be competing again at this year’s Colorado Dragon Boat Festival July 29-30. The festival celebrates Asian culture and history with performances, food, vendors, and, of course, dragon boat races. The festival has tens of thousands of visitors every year, so it is a terrific way to increase the visibility of Denver Language School in a positive way. Parents, faculty, and friends of the school are all welcome to practice and compete. Practices are starting soon and are usually Saturday or Sunday mornings at Aurora Reservoir, and the festival is at Sloan’s Lake. So come out to support the school, meet lots of new people, exercise, and learn a new sport. E

Up for the challenge? Email Moose Mamet (moosepunk@me.com) with any questions or to sign up.

Corporate Matching

More than 15,000 employers will match employee donations – does yours? So far this year more than $2,500 has been donated by Janus and Google Benevity – huge thank yous to both the corporations and their generous employees!

If your corporation offers matching funds, please direct the funds to the Denver Language School PTA, not to the school itself, to ensure the school actually receives the matched funds. Any questions or issues with the process? Contact treasurer@dlspta.org.

Show your appreciation for those who dedicate themselves to your child’s future! Please contribute to the Staff Gift Fund. Thanks again for supporting DLS with your shopping, dining, and activities!

Thank You for your Support on Colorado Gives Day!

Colorado Gives Day was a huge success - we are at 90% of our fundraising goal for the year! If you weren't able to donate on December 6, there is still opportunity to give - click the buttons below to make a recurring or one-time donation to DLS.

The DLS PTA supports a wide range of projects and activities to benefit the school community and our students.

For April 14 we highlight two DLS events that benefit from PTA support:  Chinese New Year and Fiesta Hispanica.
DLS’s take on Chinese New Year, the biggest Chinese holiday of the year, is enough to wow even native Chinese audience members and bring them back to their childhoods.  Fiesta Hispanica’s energy, excitement, and brilliant colors embrace both Spanish and Latin American cultures.
The pageantry, song, and dance are made possible, in part, by the PTA.  The PTA uses its funds to rent the performance spaces and purchase some of the decorations.  PTA volunteers oversee ticket sales, decoration of the stage, feeding teachers and students during the performances, and chaperoning students while not performing.
Gwen, Eva, our wonderful teachers, and our group of talented kids impress us every year with their language, dancing, and singing skills!

For October 21 we highlight Kindles for classrooms.
In the spring, the PTA purchased 6 Kindles for each K-5 classroom. All sorts of apps have been loaded on them for math & science instruction as well as chapter books in Spanish as well as iChinese readers for the Mandarin classes.

For more stories on how the PTA spends its money, click here

Please Save Your Box Tops for Education

Each pink box top, found on many products, is worth 10 cents when clipped and turned into the school. It adds up quickly; last year, Judit Varga coordinated the school’s efforts and raised $1,200. The goal is to earn $1,400 this year. Students can deposit box tops in collection boxes in their classrooms.

There will be three competitions to collect the most box tops this year, each with surprise rewards, so start saving them now! Learn more about the program and participating products at BTFE.com. Have any questions? Contact DLS West co-coordinator Tiffany Briseno or school coordinator Judit Varga via email jvarga23@yahoo.com.
